During strategy sessions, it often emerges that better communication is needed. Business leaders might interpret this as a call for them to speak more frequently or more forcefully. However, the real need goes beyond just increasing communication—it’s about conveying strategy and direction effectively. Strategies must be communicated clearly, simply, and in a way that is easy to understand.


The Essence of Strategic Leadership

Strategic leadership is the skill of balancing immediate objectives with a long-term vision. It involves making decisions that not only meet current needs but also lay the groundwork for sustained growth and development. Leaders who embrace this approach recognise that their role goes beyond merely directing—they must inspire and cultivate an environment where team members feel valued and motivated to give their best.

Strategies that are felt by the heart can transform routine tasks into passionate pursuits, driving individuals to go above and beyond in their roles. Moreover, clear strategies act as forward-lying breadcrumbs, creating a defined pathway towards sustained growth. I often illustrate this with the example: “If you ask a group of 40-year-old white men around a campfire a question, you’ll receive a 40-year-old white man’s answer.” Diversity, in terms of varied perspectives, leads to the best outcomes for everyone.
